Overview
Sumgait was built from the 1940s as a Soviet industrial city on the Caspian shore, and it is still Azerbaijan's main centre for chemicals and heavy industry. It is not a classic tourist destination, and it would be unfair to pretend otherwise.
That said, its seafront has been given a smart makeover, and it offers a glimpse of everyday Azerbaijani life. It is also close enough to Baku for easy day trips in either direction.
