Overview
Walvis Bay is Namibia's main port, a working town on a sheltered natural harbour between the Atlantic and the dunes of the Namib. It is less polished than Swakopmund up the road, but the wildlife is the reason to come.
Flocks of flamingos feed in the lagoon, seals and dolphins follow the boats out to Pelican Point, and just to the south the dunes plunge straight into the sea at Sandwich Harbour.

Getting around
Taxis are available, but a hire car makes most sense; tours pick up from hotels.
The airport is about 15 km east of town, a 15-minute drive; Swakopmund is around 30 minutes up the coast.
When to go
The climate is mild and dry year-round, often with morning fog. Flamingo numbers vary through the year, and the calmest boat trips are usually in the morning.
