Overview

Kankan is the main city of Upper Guinea, a savannah region of the Malinké people far inland from the coast. It grew as a trading and Islamic scholarship centre on the Milo River, a tributary of the Niger, and it still feels like a crossroads.

There are few formal sights and little tourist infrastructure. Come for the river, the markets and the chance to see everyday life in a part of West Africa few visitors reach.

Wander the residential streets around the centre, where mud-brick compounds sit alongside newer houses.

Where to stay

Getting around

Motorbike taxis are the usual way to get around town; agree the fare first. The centre is walkable in the cooler hours.

Most visitors arrive by road from Conakry, a long journey of a day or more in a shared bush taxi or hired car.

When to go

November to February is dry and relatively cool, though the Harmattan wind can bring haze. March to May is very hot, and the rains fall from June to October.
