Overview

Lubumbashi is the Democratic Republic of the Congo's second city and the hub of its copper-mining south. Founded by the Belgians as Élisabethville, it still has wide avenues, tree-lined streets and solid colonial buildings.

It's a working city rather than a tourist one, and calmer and more orderly than many visitors expect. It suits business travellers and the curious who want to see a side of Congo few outsiders reach.

Where to stay

Getting around

Taxis or a hired car with a driver are the most practical way to get around; arrange them through your hotel.

The airport is north of the centre, around 20 to 30 minutes by car; arrange a pickup in advance.

When to go

The dry season from May to September brings clear skies and cool nights. The rainy season, roughly November to March, is warmer with heavy afternoon storms.
