Overview
Bujumbura sits on the north-eastern shore of Lake Tanganyika, with the green hills of Burundi rising steeply behind it and the mountains of Congo across the water. It was the capital until the government moved to Gitega, and it is still the country's largest city and commercial heart.
Few tourists come, which is part of the appeal. Days revolve around the lake, with sandy beaches, sunset drinks and fresh fish. French and Kirundi are far more useful than English.
