Overview
Parakou is the largest city in northern Benin, a trading town on the main road between the coast and the Sahel. It is the historic centre of the Bariba people, and still has its own king.
There is not a long list of sights, so treat it as a relaxed stop on a journey north. Its markets are busy, the evenings are lively with street food stalls, and it gives a real sense of how different the north of Benin feels from the coast.

When to go
November to February is dry and comfortably warm, though harmattan winds bring dust. March and April are very hot, and the rainy season runs roughly from May to October.
