Completely Fill A Passport
Ticked off
Every page crammed with stamps, stickers and visas, a travel diary written by border guards in dozens of languages.
The adventure
A full passport is a story you can hold in your hand. Flick through the pages and each one brings back a moment: the smudged entry stamp from a remote land border at dawn, the triangular stamp from a desert crossing, the full-page visa with a hologram that took weeks to arrange, and the tiny stamp squeezed into the last corner of the last page.
Filling one is harder than it sounds. Many countries now use e-visas and electronic gates that leave no mark at all, and Europe has replaced passport stamps for visitors with a digital Entry/Exit System. The fastest way is overland: crossing borders by bus, boat or on foot, where both sides stamp you out and in. Do it right and you'll reach the point where an immigration officer flicks through every page looking for space.
Why it’s epic
- UK frequent travellers can choose a 54-page passport instead of the standard 34 pages.
- Full-page visa stickers from countries such as India or Nigeria use up a whole page each.
- Overland border crossings give you two stamps, one leaving and one arriving.
- The EU's Entry/Exit System has replaced passport stamps for visitors to the Schengen area with digital records.
What it is
Filling every page of a passport with stamps and visas is a sign of a well-travelled life.
How to do it
Overland border crossings and countries with full-page visas fill pages fastest.
Top tip
If you travel a lot, a UK passport with more pages costs only a little more.
Need to know
- Many countries need at least six months' validity and one or two blank pages, so you can be refused boarding with a nearly full passport.
- Renew in good time before a big trip, as a nearly full passport can stop you getting a visa.
- Some countries stamp inconsistently or not at all, so a filled passport usually takes many years of travel.

My experience
Ticked off, but the full story is still to be written up.
