Overview
Bratislava sits on the Danube where Slovakia meets Austria and Hungary, under an hour from Vienna. Its compact Old Town of pastel palaces, cobbled lanes and pavement cafés is overlooked by a square white castle on the hill.
It is a small capital and easy to enjoy at a slow pace. Two days covers the main sights, leaving time for a wine tasting in the nearby Small Carpathians or a ride out to the ruins at Devín.

Getting around
The Old Town is small and largely pedestrianised. Trams and buses cover the rest of the city; buy tickets before boarding or use the IDS BK app.
Bus 61 runs from Bratislava airport to the main railway station in about 25 minutes, and regular buses link Vienna airport with the city in about an hour.
When to go
May to September is warm and lively, with outdoor terraces and summer cultural festivals. Late autumn brings wine harvest celebrations, and December has Christmas markets on the Main Square. Winters are cold and grey.
