Overview

The capital of one of Europe's smallest countries is really a large village, set on the Rhine plain beneath steep, wooded mountains. The prince's castle looks down from a ledge above town, and vineyards run right up to the edge of the main street.

You can see the centre in a morning, but it is worth lingering. The museums are excellent for a place this size, the walking is superb, and Switzerland and Austria are each only a few minutes away.

Where to stay

Getting around

Liechtenstein's buses are frequent and link every village. Vaduz itself is easily walkable.

There is no railway station in Vaduz; take the train from Zürich to Sargans or Buchs and change to a bus, around one and a half hours in total.

When to go

Late spring to early autumn is ideal for walking and cycling, with long days and green hillsides. Autumn brings the grape harvest. Winter is cold but good for skiing at Malbun.
