Overview
Luanda curves around a wide bay on the Atlantic, with a palm-lined seafront, Portuguese colonial buildings and a skyline of new towers built on oil money. Founded in 1576, it is one of the oldest European-founded cities in sub-Saharan Africa.
It is a big, sprawling city that rewards some patience. The best of it is along the water: the Marginal promenade, the sandy spit of the Ilha and boat trips out to Mussulo.

Getting around
Traffic is heavy and public transport is limited, so most visitors use taxis or ride-hailing apps. Allow plenty of time.
The new airport is about 40 km south-east of the centre, roughly an hour by car depending on traffic.
When to go
The cooler, dry cacimbo season from May to October is the most comfortable. The rest of the year is hot and humid with occasional heavy rain.
