Represent My Country At A Sporting Event

The adventure

Representing your country used to sound like something only elite athletes could do. Age-group racing changed that. In sports such as triathlon, duathlon, aquathlon and obstacle racing, amateurs can qualify to compete for their nation at European and World Championships, racing against people of the same age from dozens of countries.

The moment that makes it special happens before the start. You collect a race kit in national colours, often with your name printed on it, and walk to the start line with teammates who have trained as hard as you have. During the race, supporters shout your country's name as well as your own, and at the finish you are not just someone who completed an event. You raced for your country, and that feeling stays long after the result is forgotten.

Why it’s epic

  • Age-group categories usually run in five-year bands, so you compete against people your own age.
  • British Triathlon selects age-group teams for European and World Championships through qualifying races.
  • Team kit is often personalised with your surname, just like the elite squad's.
  • Openings exist in triathlon, duathlon, aquathlon, obstacle racing and masters athletics.

What it is

Representing your country at a sporting event can mean anything from age-group triathlon teams to masters athletics.

How to do it

Age-group qualification in sports such as triathlon and duathlon is one of the most accessible routes.

Top tip

Check your national governing body's qualification rules.

Need to know

  • Qualification rules and deadlines vary by sport, so check with your national governing body early.
  • Age-group athletes usually pay for their own kit, entry and travel.
  • Most routes involve finishing high in your age group at a designated qualifying race.
